What is the Best Way to Learn Guitar?

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Chances are, if you have decided to learn the guitar, you are wondering about what the best way is to learn the guitar. How will I find the best way? Where do I look for this best way?

When I was a kid, I wanted to play the guitar.  Look at that guy playing the guitar – that looks pretty easy!  Why can’t I do that?  I wanted to do that in the WORST way!  You won’t believe this, but I got what I asked for!  I DID to learn to play – IN THE WORST WAY!  Oh Yeah, there is a WORST WAY!  I bet you found it too, haven’t you?  I had tried to teach MYSELF!  Wrong Answer!  I had a friend who was able to teach himself.  I thought he was pretty good, too.  If he could do it, that was good enough for me!  So I tried to teach myself, what a mistake!  I had no idea what I was doing, I was holding the guitar all wrong, couldn’t figure out how to get my left hand to bend right to be able to reach the strings for chords, and to be honest – it was just plain PAINFUL!  But my friend was playing, in fact we would go up onto the boardwalk and he would play for people as they walked by, and GET THIS – They would put MONEY in his Guitar Case!  Are You KIDDING ME?  Well that made me even more determined to learn to play the guitar, now!  If he was able to figure it out, I should be able to, Right?  Wrong!

So why couldn’t he just teach me? People were giving him money, he must have been able to play.  Great question, short answer, no.  some people just don’t have the patience to teach.  Sadly, he was never able to pass on what he knew.  He tried to show me some chords, but he was underqualified.  Unless you have a well thought out lesson plan, it’s IMPOSSIBLE to learn how to play the guitar.    Clearly, there is a WORST way, so what is the BEST way?  Well, from my experience, the best way is through one-on-one, step-by-step lessons that are easy to follow and understand.  My friend did not have the patience to teach me in that way.  Not many teachers can really give that kind of attention.

What can we do, then?  What is the best way to learn guitar then, since the only way to get that kind of attention is private personal instruction.  My best advise is to try to find some really good video lessons on guitar.  That should be able to give you the one-on-one feel at an affordable price.  You can pause it, stop it, start it over, rreplay from the beginning, whatever you need to do.  Need to take a break, come back tomorrow – pick up wherre you left off – That’s the power of video lessons.  Not even a high-priced private teacher can handle that action!    With video, you don’t have to worry that your teacher isn’t up to it, or that you aren’t getting it.  Make sure you fully understand what you have learned before you press play on the next lesson.  Take your time, practice as much as you need.  Then procede at your own pace.

In my opinion, Jamorama is the best online video guitar lesson available on the market today.  They are fully recommended.

If you don’t already have one, start by picking out a guitar.    Does it matter what type you learn on?  What types are there? What type do you prefer to play? What a great set of questions! Thanks for asking.  Your first and most common choice is Classical Acoustic.  The Acoustic is also very nice.  It does not matter what you learn on – as long as you learn.  They instument you play is a function of the genre for music you want to play.

If you love to ROCK – you’ll be looking at an electric, no doubt!  Really, Can I really learn how to play for the first time with an electric guitar?  Of Course you can.  Jamorama will allow you to learn with whichever instrument you feel most comfortable playing.I highly recomend Jamorama to anyone who wants to learn how to play guitar.  On my website, I have done a full review of Jamorama.  CLICK HERE to go check it out.
